The 5 Skills That Students Need Before the First Day of Kindergarten

Preparing students to be ready on the first day of kindergarten is important for ensuring future success in school. To make sure that students are ready for this big step, it’s important to make sure that they are equipped with the foundational skills necessary for a successful kindergarten experience. But what skills do students need to have before kindergarten begins?

Here are five skills that our early learners need before the first day of kindergarten:

  1. Number Sense and Counting: Students need to be able to recognize numbers and understand the relationship between numbers and quantities.
  2. Addition and Subtraction: Students should be able to understand basic math operations and be able to solve simple addition and subtraction problems.
  3. Phonological Awareness: Students should be able to recognize and work with the sounds of language, including rhyming and syllables.
  4. Phonics and Print Concepts: Students should be able to match spoken sounds with words and recognize common words in print.
  5. Alphabet Knowledge: Students should be able to recognize and name letters as well as understand the relationship between letters and sounds.
